Project: 3D Ultra Pinball
What it's about: This series of computer games included 5 titles: Outpost Oddessy, Creepnight, The Lost Continent, Nascar, and Thrillride. The series proved to be quite profitable and was released on multiple platforms including PC, Apple, and Nintendo Gameboy.
How It Began: The game started with a new way to simulate physics from one of the engineers. At the time no one knew how to best utilize it. Then someone suggested a pinball game, so I began thinking of how current pinball gaems are made. Later than night, I realized that we were not constrained by the real world limitations that current pinball machines - we could use all of cyber space for our game. A game that would be so visually amazing that people would call others in to see what was happening.
Design and Development: The game began with a simple 3D "whiteboard" that would determine where the ball could and couldn't go. On top of this we would overlay carefully rendered 3D scenery and props. But everything had to begin with lots and lots of sketches.
The Result: The game proved to be a huge success, selling hundreds of thousands of units, outpacing the competition by a factor of 10 and having people clamoring for more.
The Sequels: There were four sequels: Creepnight, The Lost Continent, Nascar and Thrillride. It took about a year to make each game, with Nascar being the exception (6 months). If it were not for a corporate decision by Sierra to close the Dynamix offices, I would still probably be making pinball games.
